Digital Scaler Signal Conditioner

SPECTEC's Digital Scaler is a frequency divider signal conditioner that conditions and scales the output from a magnetic sensor mounted on a turbine flow meter into a desired unit of measurement acceptable to a PLC, RTU or computer data collection card.

Digital Scaler Operation:

The Digital Scaler's frequency division attribute, referred to as a K-factor, interfaces with signals unsuitable for devices such as PLCs and scales them to an acceptable unit of measure. The K-factor of a turbine meter is supplied by its manufacturer. If the K-factor is set to one, the Digital Scaler has an additional application as preamplifier that takes the frequency of a low flow turbine meter and generates a proportional logic level frequency output needed by a PLC or computer data acquisition card.

The conditioned input signal from a variable reluctance sensor is used by the circuit's microcontroller to first divide the signal by a power of ten and then feed the signal to a 12 binary scaler that has a divisor range from 1 to 99,999,999. The scaler is equal to the sum of the binary and power of 8 numbers represented by each of the closed switches on the board. This scaler generates one output pulse to the output relay every time it receives a quantity of input pulses equal to the scaler number (K-factor).

Two Models of Digital Scaler Signal Conditioners

The two models SPECTEC has available are a Preset Scaler model and a Manually Adjustable Scaler model. They are easy to install in the field, with a variety of configurations offered: the circuit card alone, in a NEMA 4 enclosure, or installed in a conduit mount explosion-proof enclosure. The K-factor scaler's power supply input covers 8.5 to 30 Vdc without any selecting or adjusting necessary.

Preset Digital Scaler

The Preset Digital Scaler has a preprogrammed K-factor. The K-factor is adjusted at our facility before we ship it. This unit offers the security that the K-factor setting cannot easily be changed unless an exchange circuit card is installed. Field exchangeable electronic circuit boards are available for K-factor change.

Adjustable Digital Scaler

The Adjustable Digital Scaler is set up to be field adjusted to different K-factors.

Digital Scaler Characteristics:

Scaling 1 to 99,999,999
Input Magnetic sensor to 4 kHz with 30 mVpp to 30 Vpp sensitivity
Temp range -25 to 160° F (-32 to 71° C)
Output 0 - Vsupply; NPN with adjustable probe width
Accuracy +/- 1 count
